Respirable Crystalline Silica Testing

What is Respirable Crystalline Silica?

Crystalline silica is a common mineral used to make products such as glass, pottery, ceramics, bricks, concrete and artificial stone. High energy operations such as cutting, sawing, grinding, drilling and crushing stone, rock, concrete, brick, block or mortar can generate very small (respirable) crystalline particles. When inhaled, these respirable crystalline particles can cause multiple diseases, including silicosis (an incurable lung disease), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and kidney disease.

OSHA’s new, stricter regulations regarding Respirable Crystalline Silica

OSHA now requires employers in general industry to comply with new, stricter regulations regarding employees’ exposure to respirable crystalline silica. In order to assist employers with meeting this new OSHA standard, CFL Environmental Solutions Inc. offers respirable crystalline silica exposure monitoring to measure employees’ exposure. CFL can perform monitoring for each employee or monitoring of a representative fraction of all employees who perform the same tasks on the same shift and in the same work area. Our monitoring includes collecting personal breathing zone air samples that reflect the employees’ exposure, having those air samples analyzed by an accredited American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) laboratory, and preparing a written report that provides conclusions as to whether the lab results indicate the employees’ exposure are within OSHA’s acceptable limits or require corrective action.
